Put In : NE Side of Sister Creek Bridge or Kingfish Park on West side
of Bridge
Length : Varied
Difficulty : Moderate
Nature Stuff : Ospreys, Manatees, Dolphins, White Pelicans , Bald
Eagles,
Herons, Egrets, Shorebirds
PWC Factor : High
The best place to put-in to access this part of the ICW is at the Kingfish
Park on the north side of Heckscher Drive and the NW side of the bridge
across the ICW. You can put-in at the boat ramp but it is usually quite
busy so I will put in at a little basin located about 100 yds north of the
ramp. At low tide this basin can be a little bit mucky so another option
is to carry it around the north edge of the basin to a shell beach.
As you might imagine, your
options are pretty limitless as to where to go in the Intracoastal. To the
west is the marsh that leads you back to Hannah Mills, Cedar Point and
Clapboard Creek. To the east is Shad Creek and the marsh that runs along
the west side of Ft. George Island. Of course, you can always just head
either north or south until you hit either Maine or Miami. It's about 4.2
miles to Ft. George River where the ICW takes on another name. When I put in here it is primarily to
have quick access to the Islands that run on either side of the channel,
several of which are great for camping. I have often encountered
both manatees and dolphins in the ICW and the birdlife I have seen is
pretty unlimited.
