Put In : Alimacani Fish Camp or A1A
Length : 45-60 minutes
Difficulty : Easy
Nature Stuff : Herons, Pelicans and other bird life.
PWC Factor : Low (once in the creek)
On the S.E. edge of Ft. George
Island is a little creek that runs from the St. Johns River, under A1A to
the Ft. George River just behind Alimacani Fish Camp. It's a very short
run, depending on how extensively you want to explore. You can put in
either at the little park behind Alimacani or at one of the roads that
lead from A1A on either side.
I've done it both ways and
both are good put-ins with hard sandy bottoms. The middle section of the
creek that runs along the side of the island can only be accessed at high
tide but at high tide you can paddle right up to within a few feet of Ft.
George Island Drive.
This is also an excellent way to begin a circumnavigation
of Ft. George Island - that route is explained
here.
