Paddling
Journal January 2003 The weather can be kind of iffy
in January - hence only four trips that were worth recording. With the sun
going down so soon in the afternoon my trips are fairly short. I was treated
to a Bald Eagle sighting on my first day out.

Bald Eagle in Browns Creek |
Finally, I got out for my first paddle of the year.
The temperature had warmed up a bunch but it was quite breezy and the tide
was going so it wasn't ideal but I had put off getting out because of
all of the remodeling activities going on at the house so I was determined
to get in the water. I was quickly rewarded when as soon as I turned the
corner a large bird flew across my bow skimming the water. I watched the
pure white head glowing in the setting sun and the chocolate brown body as
it flew up into a large pine tree on the first big island north of the
bridge. He was in the shadows but I snapped a few good photos that showed
his majestic profile.

Put-In : Hannah Mills
Time : 4:45 p.m.
Temp : 45
Weather : Clear, Breezy
Water : Choppy
Tide : Incoming
What a week! We're now working on the fifth day
in a row that the temperatures have dipped below freezing! Well, today the
afternoon temperature reached the 50's and the tide was perfect so with the
weather forecast calling for wet stuff later in the week I loaded the boat
during the Super Bowl halftime figuring that it would give me some incentive
to get in the water today.
Once I reached the put-in I almost changed my mind. A stiff nor'easter had
kicked up and was blowing in my face across the
water. My hands were stinging just unstrapping the boat and getting it
ready. I bundled up and squirmed into my spray skirt and headed into the
wind. It was way too cold to even think about pictures since I had to wear
my gloves so I concentrated on paddling. It's too bad because the birds all
had the same idea that I had - stay close to shore and huddle together to
stay warm. There were several large groups along the grass. I zig-zagged
through some of the smaller streams until I reached the main cut heading to
the ICW and then floated back with the wind at my back.
Good to finally get back out there!

A good 10 degrees warmer and no wind. The water was glassy and it was a
beautiful day to be out. I paddled around the main island and then just
tooled around until the sun went down.

Little Blues in Hannah Mills |
Normally, I wouldn't go out three days in a row but the weather was just too
glorious and this time of the year you have to grab the opportunities when
they arise.
I paddled my basic circuit in Hannah, up the main channel and then a right
turn at the cedar tree and back around to the main pool. I scared up some
little blues and got some decent shots.
